Course Planning & Registration Guidance for Students and Families

This guidance outlines expectations and best practices to support informed course selection and a balanced, successful academic path

Principles for Thoughtful Course Selection

  • Shared partnership: Students are encouraged to work closely with their counselor, teachers, and family throughout registration

  • Student ownership: Course choices should be made intentionally, as they directly influence academic progress, college and career preparation, and personal development

  • Alignment with goals: Select courses that reflect interests, strengths, and long‑term aspirations

  • Due diligence: Carefully review the Course Catalog and consult the High School and Beyond Plan prior to selecting classes; discuss prospective courses with teachers to understand readiness, expectations, and workload

  • Academic rigor: Students considering selective or highly selective colleges should pursue an appropriately rigorous program of study when aligned with skills, interests, and well‑being

  • Requirements awareness: Before finalizing selections, review CHS Graduation Requirements and Washington State College Admission Requirements to ensure your plan supports on‑time graduation and post‑secondary goals

  • Balance and well‑being: Build a schedule that supports time for academics, activities, employment, family, friends, and adequate sleep

Practical Tips

  • Choose courses for their fit and interest, not solely based on peers’ choices

  • Evaluate the time commitment for homework and study in each course

  • Aim to maintain balance across academic challenge and personal well‑being

Important: Course registration reflects requests, not guarantees. Final schedules depend on course availability, staffing, and the overall master schedule. Thank you.
